Mushroom Kingdom Chronicle

Last week I wrote a guest-chronicle for a Swedish gaming website called Svampriket.se. I wanted to post it on my blog as well, but since I know most of my readers do not understand my native tongue I asked if I could translate it. Permission granted. To see the original text, follow this link. Reading it in Swedish is a lot better than English, so I recommend it if you do understand the language. As for you English-speakers out there, continue reading this post.

Unwell

There has been over a week since I last wrote a post. Even longer since I wrote about something happening in my life. I have a very good reason for this - nothing has happened. Last week I was not feeling so well so I never left the apartment. I am still unwell and really do not want to go outside. It has been raining for the last couple of days which has kept me from wanting to go out even if I felt okay. John on the other hand had to go out to get to work and got soaked yesterday. He reported that he avoided the rain this morning, but it is still raining though.

I have had this blog for almost a year now and I keep looking at the number next to the month in the archives. Five and seven is the lowest amount of posts I have done in a month. It feels like I should have had more things to write about. This month I have gotten so far as ten (with this) posts and that is okay. It is low but since I have had nothing to write about I am okay with it.

Feeling ill is blocking my writing. I open my documents but the words that are written are sad and incoherent. I am so close to the end and all I want to do is be done with it. I am looking forward to have it all there and read it from beginning to end again. Right now I can not. If I write something right now I will have to go back later and probably remove everything. My mood affects my writing. If I feel ill the writing will give away that feeling. I try to write those short moments when I feel alright. So instead of writing on the actual book I am doing side-works. Writing down all the species mentioned in the book, figuring out rules of my made-up universe and figuring out the structure of the chapters.

Tomorrow I have a planned lunch with Ash. She has two hours free for lunch. I am nervous about this. Will I be able to go? I really want to! I am hoping this will be gone by tomorrow but so far no good. This has to end soon, I have started talking to myself.

New Things in words and metal

John started working today. He has had ten days of vacation and we have been very busy. If you have missed our activities you can scroll down and read up on the latest posts. I try to write about everything that happens in our life. I am also currently trying to figure out what this blog is about. Is it a daily lifestyle kind of blog? Should it be more focused on the life of an expat? John and I had this discussion yesterday. I said I could probably do more expat-related posts. He countered with asking if that was really me. Who did I want to be on the blog? So he suggested I focused more on my writing. Not sure what I should write about that. What do you think? Do you as a reader want to know more about how I work?

Another thing we did yesterday was order John's new phone. He has had his LG G3 for almost three years now and it was slowly dying as the days went on. The latest is that he dropped the phone to the floor today and afterwards it started doing a groaning sound like a boat at sea. Then less than one minute before he got home it knocked on the door and a man handed me a package. Then John opened the door a few seconds later and there it was - his new phone. A OnePlus 3T, ordered only yesterday with express delivery. Talk about speed!

Today I spent most of the day writing. I wrote over four pages today which is the most I can write in a day (with a break of an hour or so to eat). I have no idea if any of the things I wrote are actually good and worth keeping. John is too tired to hear me read it tonight so I will work more on it tomorrow and hopefully get some feedback. I have not been writing in a while - we had a visitor, then it was Christmas and then new years eve. Finally I can get both space and time to write all day long.

Apart from that hour when I almost got an headache and had to get some air, I took an hour out on the balcony reading a chapter in the book I am currently reading. I won it in a giveaway so I did not buy it, although just looking at it it might have been a book I would have bought. I am so annoyed by this book and the author. It feels like she read Twilight and Fifty Shades and thought she could be a bestselling author by combining the two and place the story in Venice! I have so much to say about it I can not tell you anything right now. I might just write a whole post about it later. I can not put the book down before I have finished it. That will make my opinion incomplete. I just can not do that. I need to see this to the end.

Let me just say that I am counting every time the male character's blue eyes are mentioned and how often they change hue. It is ridiculous...

Slow Days

I have not been writing about my daily life in a couple of days. It feels strange. I do not have the compulsive need that I have to do something worth writing about, but I have been writing a lot recently so the strange feeling comes from not writing at all. Not even in my book.

The other day I tried to work. I read and changed things in the chapter, but never wrote anything new. Instead I came up with new names to fill in fifteen classmates. I colour-coded them to see how many males vs females and also how much each gender got in the spotlight. So far it was a lot of girls. I aim to change that. Male-characters that gets one scene in the previous chapters will be at least mentioned a bit more. Who says a teenage girl can not be friends with a guy? I think I am writing from my own experience when I was in the age of my main-character. I had no guy friends and so I do not write them in. I am planning on switching at least two girls to guys to mix it up a bit.

During the course of these event-less days I have not been sitting a lot by the computer. I have been watching a series, colouring a lot in adult colouring books (doing the zen mode thing) and also reading. My goal on GoodReads was to read fifteen books in 2016. I am currently at twelve. I did have a few slow months with reading and also I read a couple of really thick books that did take a lot of time to get through. Although, I am not giving up! I am currently reading Mostly Harmless, the last book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, which only has 240 pages or so. I will get through it soon enough. Then I will pick two other short books and reach my goal before the new year. I will probably keep my goal to read fifteen books a year since obviously I am not ready for more yet.

Last night Rebecka made a pretty massive dinner consisting of a lot of wonderful ingredients (apart from the yellow bell pepper). It was a lot and I ate a lot. I ate the most. It was so good! She filled a whole bowl full of tzatziki, chopped up a mango, feta cheese and avocado. We had the small amount of chicken we found in the fridge, which was actually a perfect amount since if it had been more it would have taken over the dish. In a mixed bowl there was cucumber, tomato, corn and that sneaky bastard called bell pepper trying to disguise itself as either corn or mango. As you can tell I am not a big fan of bell peppers - no matter the colour. There was also some baby spinach, lovely green substitute for normal lettuce which is boring, and also bread with garlic and oregano butter. To this we saw Alice Through the Looking Glass. Without high expectations this managed to receive a three out of ten from me. The others gave it a bit more. I did not like the story, the bad acting, the overly used green screen and the poorly made plot. I have not read the book yet, I do own it, but I have heard it is a different story. I am looking forward to see what sets them apart.

Several Spots and Gifts

Today I needed to buy Christmas presents. Not needed by anyone or anything. I just had this feeling that if I do not buy them today, I will chicken out and buy something else. I am not very confident with buying gifts. I had discussed them with Rebecka a few days earlier and she said they were good gifts. Today I talked to Ash about it and she said the same. I bought them. It was so scary. The price is my biggest issue. How much should I spend? How cheap is too cheap? Luckily I had asked John for a budget... well, a preferred budget from his side and I kept it within his wishes. So that could be called a gift as well!

I was out shopping before noon. Normally it takes me a few hours to get ready and I rarely go out before lunchtime. This was new and I liked it. I travelled half an hour to go shopping and was home before one o'clock. Then I noticed how hungry I had become and needed to eat immediately. Not sure if the plan was to eat with Rebecka, she had gone down to the pool during the forenoon, so I sent some messages. In the middle of my half Subway leftover from yesterday she came upstairs. She had already eaten so I continued with my lunch.

Then I did what John asked me to do this morning. I took some burning hot water, some soap and a sponge, went to the window in our bedroom and scrubbed away blood. Ymir has an old wound on his paw that he recently re-burned (if you can believe it) in the same way as the first time. Now it is a hard black spot there and we are not sure if everything looks normal. It looks burnt, but not as flesh and fur should. Or maybe it does, not sure as you probably can tell. This wound is what leaves blood everywhere. It is not always but sometimes he manages to open it and bleed wherever he goes. Right now the window looks like a polka-dotted area, the sofa is spotted and the floor is bright red in some places. The floor stains are the easiest to remove, just water and swoosh it away. The sofa we bought and can throw away, but for now we are just putting the fabric in the washing machine. The window on the other hand is the worst part. The paint soaks it in and makes it harder to remove. We have several old spots and a lot of new ones. Right now we are thinking that we might need to repaint it before leaving this apartment (whenever that will happen). Hopefully no one will notice then. Right now it is kind of a mess and not much we can do. If you have any suggestions on how to remove old blood stains from white paint... let us know!

After that I sat by my computer working. I wrote two pages the other day and read them out loud last night to John. At the end, before he could say anything, I said I heard. I know how bad that was. I was ashamed. I did not expect it. It was really bad. Not badly written, but it did not suit the story and it felt like a filler or just simple facts about the city. Not good enough. Not good at all. So today I decided to read everything in that chapter so far and then understand where I want to go from there. I did not read everything today though, I got caught editing small things instead of just reading.

John had to work late and came home around half past eight. It was really late and I had no idea what we should have for dinner. We decided McDonalds. Do not judge us. I ordered when he left work and they delivered just a few minutes before he arrived. I had rice to my nuggets, pretending it was the healthier option once again. John had burger, fries and Coke. I think this is why I can pretend that I am eating healthy. I need to get down to the gym soon, my body wants the exercise. Maybe tomorrow... and then lay by the pool. I love living in a tropical country when I know there is only cold and snow where I used to live. Suckers...

Feeling Friday

Apparently I slept really well last night. I have had rough mornings all week and been very tired up until noon. Today I woke up very relaxed. Then John said I woke him up in the middle of the night, around three or so, and told him about my dream - that I needed dementors for my prison in the game Prison Architect. I have been playing this game every morning this week and apparently it stuck in my head. I have no memory of this dream or of John - I was happily asleep.

I have a theory of why I have been so tired. I have been to the gym three days in a row (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) but yesterday my body was sore and I gave myself a day off. I have not been working out as often as this for a very long time (maybe ever) so I think my body just needed some rest. Today I am energised!

Other news: Ymir is pretty annoying. I am trying to work, sitting here by the computer writing words, and he comes around the corner meowing. I ask him what he wants; if it is food or if the litter box is full. I follow him to the food, I refill the bowls, I give him new water and he stares at me. I clean the litter box, I clean the floor and I look at him. Then I go back to my writing and after a few minutes he comes around the corner... meowing. The only thing that has been working is cuddling. I pick him up and either he lays in my lap by the computer, purring as if really pleased with himself but only for a few minutes because then he wants to leave, or I pick him up and go to the bed/sofa and cuddle there and he is so pleased and purring. Then suddenly he lashes out and his sharp claws find the most vulnerable place on my hand and I start to bleed.

My book is going well. I am working hard on the last chapters. I have an old chapter of this part in the book, but I do not like it and have to figure new things out, which takes a little longer than expected. And this is the last event in the book - it HAS to be great!

 Have a good weekend!

Desert routine

Hello October! First post and it is already the third! Time is acting strange; my head wants it to be cold outside with orange leaves falling to the ground. Instead it was a freezing twenty five degrees today... which is not very freezing at all.

Remember that cold I talked about? The one John had for a few very long days and it totally ruined his birthday weekend? Then I got sick and I felt the same as John? Apparently I did not. I was much more active than he was but I also never got as bad. Yesterday I was feeling better although the sickening feeling in my stomach made me decide not to go to a mall. Today I am as good as new.

We set the alarm half an hour earlier than usual. John has a goal that he one day will go to the gym before taking a shower and then getting to work. A routine we will slowly get used to. I am a morning person, leaving bed before seven is no problem for me. John is a night owl and likes to stay awake way past midnight. Last night he went to bed at my time, around half past eleven. Early, he said. I really want to be supportive of the gym routine project, but getting enough sleep to have that energy is something we need to work on.

So today I started writing on a chapter. I am kind of stuck, in a black space between the twist and the end of the book. Not sure what to write to fill the space in between, because it has to be something there. John suggested another challenge that the main character needs to overcome, apart from the story that is already there, which means I have to come up with even more stuff. Do not know if that will happen, maybe... we will see once this black space is filled up.

Then I got distracted with a song that was stuck on my head. Being me I googled the lyrics, as I normally do when I have a song on my head that I do not know the lyrics to, and then sang it while putting on makeup and fixing a costume that would work. I then had lunch before recording over an hour of a very short part of the song. It took so long because even though I knew I had the shot I had too much fun to stop!

Anyway, here it is. Press the link under the photo!

Blood Sick Hurt

I have had nothing to report. After John got better from a very bad but short cold, and even though we tried not to contaminate me, I fell ill too. I have since stayed indoors... I do not even know for how long. I have this incredible luck of getting several bad things at once.

Things done and Things to do

The weekend is over, John is still sick but at work, I am sleepy and life keeps moving.

Bad week, good day!

I have had a bad week. Like, from Wednesday to Wednesday... which is tomorrow. A planned bad week, lets just call it that. But already I am feeling better. I took a painkiller for my headache and a caffeine tablet for my urge to go back to bed after John left and I sat down by the computer, wasted one and a half hours on breakfast (which was really only lasting for ten minutes and then I just kept gaming...) and now finally I am opening my documents to write!

Writer's writing update

Last night we ended the day with me reading out loud from my book. This piece was five pages long and a crucial point in the story. It was the first "draft" since I will be fixing and correcting it later.

The best part of being an author is that when I finished these pages John was surprised that I was done. He wanted more, he needed to know what happened. Made me smile and also gave me some energy for writing.

Hard part is that now I do not know how to proceed. I ended at a point where the scene changes and I do not know to what. I will go back and fourth on this one thinking about what could be and what should not. I do not want to spoil anything of course so I do not write about the scene here.

It is such a good chapter that I want to read it out load to anyone wanting to hear it. That said, I will not send this to John's parents (because they have read all the previous chapters) but will wait for them to visit in September and read to them. Gives me enough time to get it done and polish everything.

See you soon!

Mornings

I love mornings. My body wakes up around ten no matter what and I feel energised eight out of ten times. I think this is incredible since I really like to get things done. It would have been hard to wake up early if I were not a morning bird.

Good writing - Poor swimming

Good evening.

John is late and I am hungry. So in this hard time I thought I should write about my day.

The lazy problems of an author

Hello.

I wanted to give you an update on what is happening here in Singapore.

John is working, like he always does. We made a schedule for me to help me write as much as possible. I have been trying to stay to the hours on the paper, but I find it very difficult. I have a problem with routines and tend to break them subconsciously. The plan is for me to work (writing, drawing, editing - somehow work on my book/world) between ten and one, then have lunch and continue to work between two and five.

All I can see is hours. Hours that wants to control me. Hours that tells me to do one thing. My brain goes against it. It will not do it. Instead it takes me to the computer; gaming or watching something unnecessary. Instead it sits me in front of the TV; gaming or watching something unnecessary.

Even though I know I want to write. I know I want to draw animals from my world. This is my life-goal, I want to be a published author and to finish my book-series. Without the schedule I will not have a steady flow, the book will be forgotten for weeks at some points. With the schedule my mind will try to fight it.

How do I stay put in my chair with only the documents up?

You can now also find my Goodreads-reviews in the sidebar to the right just under my Twitter.

Too many working men

Today was not the day I wanted several men in my apartment.

So ten minutes to nine this morning we had an Chinese man here. John had not left for work yet so he could talk to him and I could nod while not understanding their poor English. The man unscrewed every cupboard door and then screwed them back on. Then he tightened the cabinet in the bathroom. While doing this work another man came in, I wonder if he were here to help or just to stare. The second man, Indian, mostly went in and out of the door and talked in short terms with the working man.

Another man came in, this one with purple hair. He had been here before and told us that the coldest water we could get was the coldest we could get (John had the impression that water could get colder. I agree, but I guess that in Asia the water can not be as cold as it is in northern Europe). This time the purple man stood by and watched as the Chinese man worked. After a few long minutes another Indian man came in through the door, not the previous Indian. The purple man goes:

"I messaged you fifteen minutes ago! Did you come all the way from India? Huh?"

So, yeah. The not-enough-offended-guy "hung" from some device stuck to the mirror in the bathroom to probably check how well it was secured. After that he stood on an upside down bucket to reach all the way around the mirror with glue. The Chinese man continued the work on the cupboards. The Indian glued the mirror. The second Indian man peeked inside but left quickly. The purple haired man asked about Ymir and I did not want to have them there at all.

Eventually they left. Yippie! It was close to eleven and I could finally get some peace and quiet for my need to write. It went slowly. I tried to get up to speed, reading a few pages and thinking what I wanted more to happen in this chapter. Just as I was getting into it the intercom rung. I answered, asked who it was but got no reply, so I chose not to open the door downstairs.

Yet I suspected someone might knock on the door either way so I scouted through the peek-hole and waited. Soon I saw a maintenance man coming around the corner. After he used the not-functioning doorbell I opened the door like it had actually worked. His English was worse than the others. Said something about balcony and oil. Very sceptical I let him in; he did not appear to want to leave without doing what he came to do.

Out on the balcony he saw the wire mesh we had put up the day before. Said he needed to remove one piece so that he could reach whatever he was supposed to reach. I really did not understand much. Quite annoyed I let him clip away the wire mesh. He said he would put it back when he was done. I sat in the sofa to observe what the hell was going on but whatever he did did not make sense to me. First he hammered, then use a machine to perhaps file, then took a photo of it and a cardboard with our apartment number on it, used another machine to do something else and then finally used the oil he told me he would use.

Ymir the cat was very brave. He got scared of the machines but was mostly curious about the men. I locked him inside the bedroom while they were running around but took him out for short minutes just to let him see what was going on.

After almost an hour the guy was done, packed his things and left. I did notice that he did not put up the wire mesh. Even if he would I would have stopped him and said we would do it. I did not trust this guy.

Finally alone. Perhaps I can write a few pages now?

The brave kitten.

Living in two worlds

Good afternoon.

I had an informative dream about my book; a creature that lives in the woods around the school. I will not spoil anything but will give you a picture of it that I drew. Today I have been writing so much I have completely forgotten to eat lunch. At least a had a semi-big breakfast consisting a large sandwich with salad, tomato, cheese and cucumber. With that I had a nut-bar and some hot chocolate. Now it is half past four and I am starting to get hungry. I am torn between food and writing. I do not want to leave this computer, this chair, this great speed in my fingers right now. Do I really need food to keep going?

Yes. Of course I will eat, do not think otherwise. It is just so hard to tear myself away from something that is so interesting to write. Perhaps you understand me, perhaps you think I am being silly. This is the life of an author. We tend to get stuck by our stories and forget to live ourself.

Maybe I will make Sam eat in the book. Maybe that will make me realise I need to eat too. Maybe I should quit writing posts on the blog and continue writing on the book. Wait. No.

Food first.
