Cinco de Mayo - Singaporean Version

If you are planning an event, specifically a celebration with cheap drinks, do estimate how many people will attend. Last night when we arrived a Chimichanga it was so crowded! The restaurant was a hole in the wall with few tables outside. It was ridiculous!

I dressed for celebration. A black skirt, a nice shirt, I even put on make up and straightened my hair! When we got there, it felt like too much. I could have gone in what ever comfortable clothing I would like.

I met John on the MRT and we went straight to Rochor. At the station John went inside the toilet to change his less celebratory shirt to one I had brought for him. Then it was just a short walk and once again we found it fun to realise we recognised where we were. I accidentally took the wrong alley and ended up between two bigger streets where it could have made me feel unsafe if it had not been Singapore. Eventually we found it and our friends. Even though they had been there for almost an hour, the only table they had managed to get was one with two seats outside the next store over with no fans reaching us. Three were standing while two could sit. It was too hot to be there and so the three standing went inside to try and find something else. I stayed with Dawn until Ash came out to say we could move inside to another small table.

It was extremely loud music and thus everyone needed to shout, so the overall volume of the small, crowded restaurant was unhealthy for sure. The new table only had three seats; one broken chair, one IKEA stool and one chair that another table took from us after a while. We ended up standing around our table that was both inconveniently and conveniently placed by the queue to the counter. We ordered a bucket of Corona beer (five bottles), beef nachos and guacamole. The guacamole and the small bowl of nachos costed S$7! It was not even that good, barely tasted anything. Anyone of us could have made a better one. The beef nachos were alright, though small and a bit cold. Even the beer, though they arrived in a bucket of ice, was warm. Second round of orders; we wanted tequila shots but they were out of tequila (though we saw trays of shots being brought to several tables after we asked for it), instead we got another round of Corona, but they only had four left and we were given a San Miguel Pale Ale instead.

Rest assured we did not stay much longer after that.

A friend of Dawn's had joined us at Chimichanga and he knew a bar where we could get good tap beer. We followed, walked a proclaimed short but not that short distance to a place opposite his restaurant. It was closed. The bar next over was open and we headed inside that one instead. We were taken to the VIP room, though there were nobody downstairs but another two groups in the VIP room. From the waitress I ordered a Na-palm Drink, not sure of the name. I think it was yellow/orange with two pieces of banana leaves, a purple flower and half a passion fruit which the waitress lit on fire before putting it on the table in front of me. Then I blew it out, plucked everything out of my glass and tasted the drink. Interesting, to say the least, and strong. It tasted a lot of alcohol but it was still good.

We never planned on staying long, but just as we were leaving the two waitresses came up with trays of shots. Courtesy of the bartender. We sat back down around another table and took the shots. Surprisingly good! Best thing I had all night. Tequila (finally) that did not taste like tequila, it was mixed with syrup. Very exciting shot! We paid and ordered a cab. Ash and Steve went with us home. We ordered McDonalds in the car, but only managed to press order once we were outside the condo. The food arrived just as us girls had taken of our makeup and were dressed down to comfy clothes. The guys chose a movie and we cuddled up in the sofa. The movie could be a porno, but it could also be a scary or parody, or even a serious comedy movie! We are not sure. It was called Don't Fuck in the Woods. (IMDB classifies it as horror, but they are not always right you know.)

Once the movie had ended the guests ordered a cab and headed back to their place on the east coast of Singapore. John and I cleaned up a bit and went to bed. Lesson learned from the evening: don't celebrate Mexican Holidays in Asia.
